I want to know how to fire or how to operate a kiln by myself, so letting someone else fire my stuff doesn’t allow me to start learning that process. It also means I have no control on how my stuff will turn out. There were times the glaze of my stuff did not look as good as it was supposed to because the one who fired it did not think through how placing a white-glazed item too close to other non-white-glazed items would affect the final results. As it takes me much longer than others to finish one piece – since I do ceramic part time, I can’t afford going through the long process and get “screwed up” at the very last step because of someone else.
My kiln research started November last year – around the same time Skutt – one of the most well-known kiln manufacturers, was calling for orders before they raised their prices in December. I already read a lot about kiln, but I have not made up my mind so I decided to pass that “promotion”. My consideration came down to how I will handle the ventilation. The ventilation equipment for the kiln requires a big hole drilled through the wall to funnel the heat out of the house. I rent the house where I currently live, so I don’t want to damage the wall. I need to look for a kiln that as big as it can get, but it has to be small enough that it doesn’t require ventilation. There were not many options for that, and I ended up with the second smallest kiln model from Skutt.

The kiln left the manufacturer on Feb 14th, while I had a business trip on Feb 15th and only returned on Feb 26th. So I got to unbox my Valentine’s gift two-week late, but as you can tell – it was totally worth the wait. It took me another two weeks to have my first firing with the kiln. It was a bisque fire. I needed an additional week or ten days to do the first glaze fire. Operating a kiln is not as hard as I thought; and especially a small kiln like mine is not so “scary” to put it in the garage. I’ve also been much more productive with the kiln. Firing small batches each time helps me learn about firing and prepares me to fire more “serious” pieces. I also feel like I can explain how and why a piece turned out the way it looks by firing it myself; while previously I can only guess what they did – especially what they did wrong to my piece.
The feeling of opening the kiln after a glaze fire is just precious! I’ve done several glaze fires and I always save and open my kiln first thing in the morning. Now besides taking the dog out, making and sipping my coffee, opening the kiln is my favorite thing to do to start the weekend 😀
