The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sculpture - Metropolitan Museum of Art
Sculpture at MET

I never thought one day I’d be interested in visiting museums. The last museum I’d been to with excitement – before I started doing ceramics, was The Louvre in Paris. I went there in 2007 as I attended a conference with two classmates to present our academic research. The Louvre was a must-see for a Paris first time visitor, so I went. After that, I learned that going to museums meant I should have some interest or curiosity about arts, history, or any other social science domain. I did not have much of it then; and ever since it has not been exciting for me to visit museums.

Ceramics changed everything. Since I started doing ceramics, I’ve found myself interested in going to museums and galleries more and more. Exactly a month ago – on my birthday, I had a birthday trip to New York and one of the things I planned several weeks prior to the trip was which contemporary arts galleries or museums I should go to. The list was long, and it was difficult for me to decide, but among all the names I insisted to go to MET – the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. Fortunately, Like Life sculpture exhibition was happening at MET in July. My birthday last year was when I attended my first ceramic class ever. So I thought nothing could be more meaningful to me than checking out the development history of sculptures – the branch in ceramics that I’ve been pursuing.

MET was somewhat what I expected: it has the grandness of something historical, at the same time it is also timeless. Nothing beats seeing and even touching the display in real life (and I wonder how I used to ask this silly question: Can’t we find and see almost everything on the internet?) The educational aspect of museums is obvious. Museums don’t just display artworks, they make me feel like I am stepping into history. They not only show me arts, they make me think about the whole making process, they make me wonder how many failures and experiments the artist had to go through – in order to create such a masterpiece, they make sure the stories behind the artworks are communicated.

Galleries are more modern, they typically show works by current artists, and these works are usually available for sales as well. I checked out a few galleries in NYC, and the experience is significantly different. Galleries limit visitors from taking photos, and they care more about whether you will buy the artworks or not – so all the greetings and questions are to figure this out. I am more interested in contemporary arts – more of which can be found in galleries, but I have to compromise the experience as a visitor there.

Here are some impressive pieces I saw at Like Life Exhibition:
