- Sau khi đã làm ra sản phẩm – bạn cần phải để cho sản phẩm thật khô trước khi nung sản phẩm lần đầu tiên, hay còn có thể gọi là nung thô.
- Tráng men
- Nung sản phẩm lần cuối
Ở những bài viết trước, tôi có nói về sự khác nhau giữa các loại đất sét và bốn phong cách làm đồ gốm thủ công. Trong bài viết này tôi muốn viết về một số lưu ý khi làm khô sản phẩm và hai bước nung sản phẩm: nung thô và nung lần cuối. Men là một chủ đề rất rộng – có lẽ rộng bằng hoặc thậm chí rộng hơn cả chủ đề đất sét, vì vậy tôi sẽ viết về men vào một dịp khác.
Mức độ khô của sản phẩm:
Đất sét hoặc bất kỳ một sản phẩm gốm nào đều trải qua những mức độ khô/ướt khác nhau, nhưng tên chung cho các trạng thái của sản phẩm trước khi nung là greenware.
Nếu bạn mua đất sét đã dược chế biến sẵn, khi mới lấy nguyên từ trong bọc hoặc túi ra, đất sét còn ướt – và ko bất ngờ gì – đất sét ở trạng thái này gọi là đất sét ướt – wet clay. Đất sét ướt tương đối dính, và thông thường nhào đất sét là bước đầu tiên phải làm sau khi lấy đất sét từ trong bọc ra – dù đó là handbuilding hay throwing. Động tác nhào đất sét này – wedging, có nhiều tác dụng: loại bỏ những bóng không khí bên trong đất sét, làm khối đất sét đồng đều, kết dính với nhau hơn và vì thế sẽ đỡ bị dính vào tay hay các bề mặt khác; đối với throwing: động tác nhào theo hình xoáy ốc giúp khối đất sét “làm quen” với chuyển động theo hướng xoay tròn.
Một trạng thái ướt quan trọng khác của đất sét là leather hard – dịch sang tiếng Việt là ướt hoặc “dẻo” như da. Ở trạng thái leather hard, cấu trúc của sản phẩm đủ cứng để tự đứng vững mà ko dùng những dụng cụ khác để chống hoặc đỡ, nhưng bề mặt của sản phẩm vẫn đủ mềm để tiếp tục những thao tác khác như chạm trổ, cắt, hoặc gắn thêm những chi tiết trang trí. Nếu bạn tạo slab từ đất sét ướt và phơi slab trên một tấm gỗ phẳng hoặc chất liệu thấm nước, ở nhiệt độ phòng (có thể đặt trước quạt cho nhanh khô hơn), thì slab sẽ đạt tới trạng thái leather hard sau khoảng từ 45 phút đến vài tiếng đồng hồ – tuỳ vào nhiệt độ thực tế và độ ẩm của môi trường. Nếu bạn muốn duy trì trạng thái leather hard này để tiếp tục làm việc trong những ngày tiếp theo, bạn có thể bọc kín slab với một hoặc hai lớp túi ni-lông.
Trạng thái của sản phẩm khi đã khô hoàn toàn gọi là bone-dry, tạm dịch sang tiếng Việt là khô như xương. Đây là trạng thái dễ vỡ nhất của sản phẩm – vì thế bạn không nên để chồng sản phẩm lên nhau (như đĩa, bát, hoặc đặt sản phẩm nọ lên trên sản phẩm khác để tiết kiệm không gian). Bạn cũng nên rất cẩn thận khi di chuyển sản phẩm, khả năng làm vỡ sản phẩm khi di chuyển từ giá phơi đến lò nung là hoàn toàn có thể nếu bạn ko cẩn thận.
Hai bước nung sản phẩm:
Khi sản phẩm đã đạt tới trạng thái bone-dry là lúc bạn có thể nung sản phẩm lần đầu tiên. Mục đích của lần nung đầu tiên này – hay còn có thể gọi là nung thô (tiếng Anh là bisque-fire) là để có một sản phẩm thô đủ cứng để tráng men. “Đủ cứng” ở đây có thể hiểu là cứng hơn rất nhiều so với sản phẩm ở trạng thái bone-dry, nước đã được loại bỏ hoàn toàn khỏi sản phẩm, nhưng thân gốm thì chưa đạt đến nhiệt độ chín của đất sét. Sản phẩm sau khi được nung thô được gọi là bisque. Nhiệt độ nung thô thường tương đối thấp so với nhiệt độ chín của đất sét, và bisque của các loại gốm sáng màu sau khi nung thô thường có màu tương đối giống nhau: màu trắng ngà. Vì vậy nếu bạn nung thô cùng một lúc nhiều loại gốm với nhiệt độ chín khác nhau, bạn nên đánh dấu cẩn thận để có thể phân biệt được miếng bisque nào là làm với loại gốm nào.
